The Washington Wrap

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Redskins fans!

This week on the Redskins Capital Connection, hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are joined by friend of the show Jerry Brewer (Washington Post).

Together, we're discussing the Redskins win over the Cardinals and what, if any, impact the win has on things like Jay Gruden's job security, as well as the psyche of the players.

We're also tipping our hats to the Redskins players who were selected for the Pro Bowl this year, and figuring out who among them is actually likely to play in the exhibition.

Also of note, this week saw the closed arbitration between Scot McCloughan and the Washington Redskins, and we talk about our expectations for that process moving forward.

And is this week the last time we'll see Kirk Cousins in the burgundy and gold at FedEx Field?

All of that and more on another episode of the RCC podcast!

Among a pile of diapers and a background of no sleep, the On the Warpath boys are back!

Robbie Duncan and Rob Henson are here as we barrel towards the end of an ugly season, and as usual there are three rounds of debate on deck today.

Firstly, what's going on with Su'a Cravens? We've heard he's been 'medically cleared to return to football'... but did we know he wasn't medically available?!

After that, we can't ignore the question that everyone is talking about this week; does Jay Gruden need to worry about his job in 2018?

And finally, something that might be bubbling under the surface is the question about Josh Norman - will he walk away from the Redskins?

Tune in to hear the bells and have a front-row seat to the backstage pass!

We're back!

After a one week hiatus due to some rubbish scheduling on our part, the world's number one podcast dedicated to the Washington Redskins is back just in time to.... talk about the second crappy loss in a row. Hooray?!

Hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips may be on the opposite side of the world from each other, but don't let the geography fool you; we here at Redskins Capital Connection are plugged in to everything that's going on and are here to help you peek behind the curtain and stay up to date on everything Redskins, even if you've now checked out mentally on season 2017 and are now just hyping yourself up for the release of Star Wars this week. We understand.

On today's show we're joined by pal Chris Russell (106.7 The Fan), and together we focus on a couple of key questions, starting with Jay Gruden and whether or not he is (or should be) on the hot-seat.

Sort of related but also sort of separately, we also discuss the comments we're hearing from players like DJ Swearinger and Josh Norman, and what they might mean for the coaching situation.

We'll also take a look at guys like Trent Williams who could be shut down for the year now that the Redskins are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

All that and much more!

Fresh off the holiday weekend, it's time to get back to football with your hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips

The reason we're recording this week's Redskins Capital Connection podcast on Monday is because the Redskins find themselves in the middle of a strange schedule at the moment - after beating the New York Giants on Thanksgiving last Thursday in a 20-10 victory, they play a second consecutive Thursday game this week against the Dallas Cowboys down in Texas. It's kind of a crappy situation, as we'll get into a bit later with this week's guest; JP Finlay from NBC Sports Washington and fellow Redskins podcast extraordinaire!

We also get an update on who will start at Safety opposite DJ Sweainger, what the plan is for Running Back Byron Marshall, and we comment on the speculation surrounding Kirk Cousins' future as it stands this week.

All that and so much more on another episode of the RCC podcast!

The Redskins found a new way to break our hearts this week... or maybe it was just an old way refreshed.

But either way the loss against the New Orleans Saints hurt in more ways than one, and not least of which because it added yet more names to the Injured Reserve list.

Your hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are here to make sure you're well and truly up to date on all things Washington Redskins football. We'll talk about who is done for the year and who the Redskins will be looking to step up as replacements, as well as casting our eyes forward to this week's NFC East division match up against the New York Giants.

And as a bonus treat, we'll also be answering some of your questions sent through to us on pretty short notice for a bit of an RCC Q&A!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This week's episode of On the Warpath has come out a little later than we would have liked, but unfortunately life with a newborn baby works to it's own schedule!

But that hasn't stopped hosts Robbie Duncan and Rob Henson from getting into this week's big issues surrounding the Washington Redskins.

How can the Redskins defense play so well one week but totally collapse against the Vikings? And the inconsistencies continue at the Quarterback position, too.

If Washington are going to take care of business vs New Orleans this week, things will need to tighten up, and fast

To borrow a quote from today's guest on the Redskins Capital Connection podcast - "Nothing ever changes with the Redskins".

On today's show your hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are going to be doing their part to make sure you're well informed and nicely up to date on everything that's happening around the team this week.

As the Redskins come off a 38-30 loss to the Vikings, they don't have time to sit around and lick their wounds because they head straight into another tough NFC match up against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Today's guest is our pal Michael Phillips, Sports Editor of the Richmond Times Dispatch, and together we talk about why Josh Doctson and the rest of the receivers can't be expected to be wide open all the time, how Josh Norman will respond to a down-game, what happens at the Running Back and Inside Linebacker positions now that injuries have taken a toll there, and of course, we talk about Kirk Cousins

We're back!

That's right, the Rob's are reunited as their technical difficulties are resolved and families have grown, as Robbie Duncan is once again joined by Rob Henson to bring you On the Warpath

This week's episode is focused on how the Redskins victory against Seattle can be a blueprint for how this team can win even when players struggle, before the conversation moves on to Josh Doctson and just how incredible he can be (and don't worry, there's surely no bias at play from TCU alumni Henson on the matter), before finally wrapping it all up with a preview of the Vikings game this week.

It's good to be back debating the big topics around the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins marched out of the 'Clink' in Seattle victorious in an unlikely 17-14 win. So how did they do it?

Well, a huge part of that was the astounding level of play of the Washington defense. But don't take our word for it...

Joining hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips on today's episode is Redskins Linebacker Mason Foster (@Mason_Foster), who continues his adjustment from suiting up in the burgundy and gold on Sundays to becoming a live game analyst on social media now that he's on the Injured Reserve list.

How much does the defensive game plan need to adjust when key players are out injured? How much does the defensive playbook open or shut when facing a mobile Quarterback like Russell Wilson, compared to a guy coming up on the schedule this week in Case Keenum? And what was it like playing Middle Linebacker behind Jonathan Allen and Matt Ioannidis? All those questions and more were discussed as Mason Foster took us behind the curtains and gave us a great look into what it takes to play defense at the highest level.

Plus Chad goes into detail about his post-game comments regarding Kirk Cousins that attracted so much attention on Twitter, and as always, the game MVP 3-2-1 votes are allocated.

All that and more on another huge episode of Redskins Capital Connection.

With regular host Rob Henson celebrating the birth of his newborn son Maverick Henson this week, the On the Warpath boys needed to bring in a ringer who could keep the game-plan running smoothly.

After hearing his Redskins Capital Connection podcast debut last week, host Robbie Duncan decided to put the call out, and is joined this week by 106.7 The Fan's Redskins Beat Reporter Craig Hoffman as the guest co-host!

Robbie & Craig discuss what the heck is with all these injuries the Redskins are having to deal with, Jay Gruden vs Kirk Cousins in terms of the difference between the gameplan and the execution, and preview the upcoming Seahawks game.

Even though things aren't all sunshine and rainbows in Redskins nation right now, there's still plenty to talk about this week as we recap the 33-19 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, preview this week's west-coast trip to Seattle, and also take a bit of a look at what's happening around the team at the moment.

To help hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips do all that, this week we were going to bring in Redskins Capital Connection's own Robbie Duncan, who you can normally hear on our sister podcast On the Warpath, but Robbie and his co-host (former Redskins linebacker) Rob Henson have been having absolutely horrendous luck with technical difficulties the past few weeks. And that continued this morning when Robbie Duncan's laptop stopped charging.

So whenever we need a guest at the last minute, without fail our Queen-loving Commonwealth counter-part from the sunny countryside of the United Kingdom is always willing and able to be our pinch hitting professional... it is the tanned skinned, deep voiced football film afficianado himself, Mark Bullock

The Washington Redskins have six players on Injured Reserve, sixteen players on the injury report, and on Sunday they play football on a short week against their arch rivals the Dallas Cowboys coming off a bruising loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So yeah, things are going great right now.

On today's show hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are joined by good mate Liz Clarke from the Washington Post to discuss the mammoth injury situation, the narrative with Kirk Cousins after yet another prime time loss, and the next month of football on the Redskins schedule because it looks tough beyond comprehension.

We also ask the sobering question; will Jay Gruden find himself on the hot seat if things go sour this season?

But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom this episode, as you'll see when you tune in!

The Redskins have moved to 3 and 2 on the season following what can best be described as a rather pedestrian 26-24 victory at home over the San Francisco 49ers. But 3 and 2 is obviously better than 2 and 3, and it's also good enough to keep Washington firmly in the playoff hunt!

However, if the Redskins are going to make a run for the post-season, then they will need to have a lot better luck than they've had with injuries to start the season, and that's probably the biggest story around the team at the moment; who is hurt, who is and isn't available, and really... what the hell is going on?!

To help hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips figure that out, as well as previewing the massive NFC East game on Monday Night Football against the Eagles in Philadelphia, they are joined by 106.7 The Fan's Redskins beat reporter Craig Hoffman (making his RCC debut today!)

Together they talk about the continued improvement of Matt Ioannidis, expanding Josh Doctson's role in the offense, and the roadmap to victory against Carson Wentz, to name just a few of the topics covered!

We've reached the first quarter mark of the 2017 Washington Redskins campaign, and it just so happens to coincide with the bye week, so what better time to recap not only the 29-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, but also step back and look at the big picture after four games.

The Redskins find themselves at 2-2 heading into the bye, and there have been some enormously positive signs so far, but also still some areas of concern remain, and the room for improvement is still very much there.

To help host Chad Ryan unpack all of this, friend of the show Michael Phillips (Richmond Times-Dispatch Sports Editor) dials in and talks about the biggest bright spots, the biggest surprises, and the biggest concerns as the Redskins look to compete for a playoff spot once again in 2017.

It was a huge week of football, both on and off the field, as the Washington Redskins absolutely decimated the Oakland Raiders in a performance that we haven't seen in many, many years. The question now is; was it an aberration, or have the Redskins turned a corner?

To help hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips really dive deep into that question, as well as unpacking the protests that cast a large shadow over the football world this weekend, they are joined by Jerry Brewer from the Washington Post.

They start off with a discussion about the President's comments and the way the football world, and specifically the Redskins, responded. If you don't want to listen to that, skip ahead to the 19:30 mark when the discussion squarely comes back to football, including just how that win against the Raiders can be the kind of victory that changes the identity of a team.

We then move on to previewing what is perhaps the toughest game on the Redskins 2017 schedule as they travel to Arrowhead stadium in Kansas City under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.

Together they cast their eyes forward for the big game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football as well, and talk about the keys to victory on a tough road trip.

You want a big show? You've got a big show!

On today's Redskins Capital Connection, we are pulling out all the stops to bring you the best wall-to-wall coverage of the Washington Redskins!

First up, hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are joined by Redskins beat reporter Lake Lewis (USA Today's The Redskins Wire) to recap the week two victory over the Los Angeles Rams - a game that became a bit of a 'bodybag' encounter for the Redskins that saw a whopping eight players leave the game injured at different points.

We then cast our eyes forward to the prime time Sunday night game at FedEx Field against the Oakland Raiders, and to do so we're joined by Redskins royalty! Santana Moss dials in to the show and explains why Redskins fans should be more patient with Terrelle Pryor and Josh Doctson, and also what makes the Raiders receivers so dangerous.

Regular season football! At last! It's here!

Don't get us wrong. Training Camp is fun. Preseason has it's place. Offseason workouts can present interesting storylines. But none of that holds a candle to the pure unadulterated joy that comes with the territory of regular season football.

The Washington Redskins open their 2017 season hosting division rivals the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, and to help hosts Chad Ryan, Mark Phillips, and Robbie Duncan preview that game, we're joined today by Conor Orr (NFL.com/Around the NFL podcast) making his Redskins Capital Connection debut!

Together they discuss the battle between the Redskins re-designed Wide Receiver corps vs the Eagles re-designed Cornerbacks, the importance of winning the battle in the trenches, and just where the Redskins ceiling is for 2017.

Today's Redskins Capital Connection podcast is a special unscheduled episode - we're not going to be talking about week one versus the Eagles today, or hit any of our season preview topics - we'll be covering all of that on Wednesday's regularly scheduled RCC podcast.

Instead this is a quick-hit episode today, and we're here to talk about the news that broke Sunday afternoon that Redskins second year player Su'a Cravens has had to be talked out of retiring, and to give both the team and player some time, he's been placed on the non-football exempt list.

Whenever news breaks, good or bad, the Washington Post's Mike Jones is our first port of call. To understand what's behind all of this, as well as the ramifications for the Redskins moving forward, we dive into the history, the facts, and the confusion surrounding what is clearly a strange and surreal situation.

Thankfully the Redskins won in week three versus the Cincinnati Bengals, because we didn't want to have to dive through the history books to figure out when the last time they lost their first three was!

This week, your Redskins Capital Connection hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips are joined by the infamous Chris Russell (aka Big Sexy), as they discuss the myriad of questions emanating out of Redskins park. What happens at Defensive Tackle now that Phil Taylor is out for the year? Does the fact that the Redskins looked better in week three of the preseason assuage any concern about the season ahead? For the first time in eleven years, the Washington Redskins have lost their first two preseason games. But should we be worried? We love to think preseason doesn't really matter, but how true is that notion really?

Together Chad and Liz wonder about Josh Doctson's usage (12:33), Jay Gruden's mentality towards a certain favorite football player (19:16), and a look at some obvious (and some less obvious) names on the bubble as we approach the roster cut-down day (24:05).

Although the Washington Redskins players, coaches, and fans would have liked a better showing against Baltimore in week one of the preseason, the good news is that they get a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers!

Your hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips take you through all the big stories to come out of the Ravens game, starting with the injuries to Trent Murphy and Su'a Cravens and what that means for guys like Ryan Anderson and Deshazor Everett. They then talk about who looked good in preseason week one, but who also needs to step up if they want to make this Redskins 2017 roster.

They also spend time breaking down the interesting dynamics at play in terms of the players at Inside Linebacker, what the difference between a 'Mike' and 'Mo' Inside Linebacker is, and what configuration of personnel is most likely to succeed.

Just because the six week break between the end of OTAs/minicamp and the start of training camp is the quietest part of the NFL calendar doesn't mean that the Redskins Capital Connection crew are sitting around simply waiting for Redskins season 2017 to begin!

This week your hosts Chad Ryan, Mark Phillips, and Robbie Duncan provide a quick recap of all the headlines out of Redskins park in recent weeks (02:58), before they turn their attention to the defensive front of the Washington Redskins (14:18). With so many new faces involved, projecting who fits where and what to expect from this unit quickly becomes an engaging and interesting exercise, and one that leads all three hosts to declare various levels of optimism going into the season ahead.

After spending so much time talking about the Redskins defensive front, what better way to finish up than going directly to the source? To do that we were joined on the line by second year Redskins Defensive End Anthony Lanier. Not only do we provide an overview on the specific individual players drafted, but we also discuss how the Redskins war-room itself operated throughout the draft, and how much does the ghost of General Manager Scot McCloughan linger over the course of this draft?

Combined with the plethora of deep draft coverage we have up on RedskinsCapitalConnection.com, as well as Friday's quick 'morning after' podcast where we went into detail on the Jonathan Allen selection, today's episode really equips you with everything you need to know about the 2017 Washington Redskins draft class.

Good news, Redskins fans; it wasn't a dream.

Yes, the Washington Redskins really were fortuitous enough to have hometown hero and absolute stud Defensive Lineman Jonathan Allen fall into their laps at pick 17, where he was promptly snapped up.

Hosts Chad Ryan and Mark Phillips recap the crazy night that was Round One of the NFL Draft, including Chad's late night phone call with Redskins Insider Michael Phillips live from NFL Draft headquarters in Philadelphia. Michael was one of the few Redskins reporters in Philadelphia for the draft, and as such was also one of the first to actually speak with Jonathan Allen after he was drafted.

Together we recap (and provide reassurance regarding) the situation with Allen's shoulders, what role he'll play with the Redskins, and what this pick means for the rest of the Redskins draft.

Also, we run you through the names we'll be looking at in Round Two of the NFL Draft tonight, because there is still plenty of talent left on that board!

All that and more in this special 'morning after' edition of the Redskins Capital Connection podcast.

Just because it's the offseason doesn't mean that the Redskins Capital Connection crew is slacking off, and to prove it, this week's episode is a double-header!

First up, hosts Chad and Mark are joined by Reese Waters, comedian, ESPN presenter, writer for TheUndefeated.com, and above all else, Redskins fan. We talk about finding the humor in following the Washington Redskins even when they continually break our heart, as well as trying to figure out if it's gotten to that point of the offseason where we've willingly forgotten the past torment and are bewilderingly optimistic for the season ahead.

Later in the show we are once again joined by our good friend Mark Bullock from the Washington Post Insider as well as the Bleacher Report Top 1000. With Mark we break down the status of the Safety position with the Redskins as it currently stands, and try to ascertain whether or not DJ Swearinger and Su'a Cravens are locked in as the starters for 2017, or if there's still room for a rookie.

We also cover off the latest news from Redskins park. All that and more on this week's episode of the Redskins Capital Connection podcast!

It is entirely possible that there hasn't been a more tumultuous week in recent Redskins history than the past seven days.

That is not hyperbole, either.

In the space of a week we've seen General Manager Scot McCloughan fired with cause, Quarterback Kirk Cousins requested a trade to the San Francisco 49ers, the Redskins became the first team in NFL history to lose two 1,000 yard receivers in the same offseason, and Head Coach Jay Gruden was extended for two years. And that's not to mention the fact that free agency has commenced!

To help hosts Chad and Mark wade through these murky waters, they are joined by the one and only Mike Jones from the Washington Post, who has been on the cutting edge of the McCloughan story (among others) in the past few weeks. Together, we peel back the curtain and ask Mike when he decided that this story had real meat on the bone, so to speak, and what went into going public with the sordid details of the apparent Scot McCloughan/Bruce Allen turf war.

We also cover off NFL free agency and the latest in Redskins news on that front, and finally, yes, we address the latest on the Kirk Cousins trade front, as well as Chad addressing his controversial "90% likely" report.

All that and more on another episode of Redskins Capital Connection!

Either the Washington Redskins are a team in disarray, or they aren't. Either Scot McCloughan is finished in Washington, or he isn't. Either Kirk Cousins is the Redskins Quarterback of the Future, or he's not. Either the media is over-blowing the drama surrounding the team, or they aren't.

This week, those are the questions that your On the Warpath hosts Anthony and Rob are attempting to answer, and to help them do so they're joined by Redskins Capital Connection's own Robbie Duncan

Together, they also try to focus on football related matters as they recap the NFL scouting combine and identify potential targets for the Redskins.

No matter what way you look at it, there's a lot happening in Washington at the moment, so tune in and listen to the On the Warpath team do their best to break it all down.

Major confusion and uncertainty quickly surrounded the Washington Redskins as news broke that General Manager Scot McCloughan would not be attending the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this year. The official report was soon clarified that it was due to a death in his family, but a conflicting report also came out that said McCloughan had been "sent home" from Redskins park on February 20 and told not to return. Oooh boy.

Hosts Chad and Mark are joined by friend of the show and 106.7 reporter Brian McNally, who was in direct contact with McCloughan as the story broke last night. McNally walks us through everything that we know, everything that we don't know, and what it all means.

We also discuss the latest news on the Kirk Cousins contract saga, as news broke today that formal negotiations have begun, but the team and player remain "far apart" in contract talks.

Finally, we unpack the NFL scouting combine itself, and get the latest from Indianapolis!

A huge show that can't be missed!

Just because it's the offseason doesn't mean things aren't happening!

This week's on Redskins Capital Connection, hosts Chad and Mark bring you a humdinger of a show, as they dive straight into the Kirk Cousins contract uncertainty. Chad shares his outline of four possible outcomes for this saga to get resolved, and ranks them in order of most to least likely to occur.

Later in the show, we talk to Dan Kadar, the NFL Draft editor from SB Nation, whom you may know on twitter as @MockingTheDraft. He released a very interesting mock draft this week that had Scot McCloughan and the Redskins trading down from 17 to 26 with Seattle, and selecting Washington's Budda Baker, a safety with a lot to get excited about.

And speaking of Scot McCloughan, we give you an oft-overlooked aspect of the media-gag that Redskins president Bruce Allen has slapped on him.

All that and more on this week's Redskins Capital Connection!

The On the Warpath boys are back in 2017, and in this first show of the new year, they debate all the Redskins news that's occurred since the end of the season!

What is the team going to end up doing with Kirk Cousins? Tag? Trade? Wave goodbye? There's a lot of different pathways ahead for Bruce Allen and the front office when it comes to the Quarterback. What about the coaching changes with the firing of Joe Barry and the vacancy left by Sean McVay's taking over the reigns in Los Angeles? Were the new Offensive and Defensive coordinators that the Redskins selected a result of panic moves? And finally, this remains a roster with many holes to be filled; which Redskins free agents should be retained, what about free agents brought into the organization, and of course... the draft!

All that and more on the first episode of On the Warpath for 2017!

The Washington Redskins have found themselves both a new Offensive and Defensive Coordinator for season 2017 (and beyond?), promoting two in-house assistant coaches in Matt Cavanaugh and Greg Manusky, respectively.

Given some of the big names linked with the Redskins coordinator vacancies, especially on the defensive side, should fans be disappointed or concerned about what these "uninspired" in-house promotions signal for ongoing stability moving forward?

To help hosts Chad and Mark unpack all of that, they once again call upon good friend of the show and all around football genius Jerry Brewer from the Washington Post. Unsurprisingly, Jerry brings some fascinating insight into the selection process and the perceptions that emanate from these hirings.

Towards the end of our chat, we ask Jerry about the current status of the looming negotiations between the Redskins and Kirk Cousins, and Jerry drops a couple of bombs on us about just how different the public comments from each side may be compared to the actual thinking and plans.

It's a must-listen episode for Redskins fans who, like us, still live and breathe Redskins football even in the early stages of what is already proving to be an interesting offseason!

Well, it's over.

The Washington Redskins 2016 campaign has come to an unceremonious end, with the team finishing 8-7-1 and on the outside of the playoffs, looking forlornly in.

It's incredibly hard to summarise just what happened this year for the Redskins, so to help us take stock of the past 5 and a half months of football, hosts Chad and Mark are joined by fellow Redskins Capital Connection team members Anthony Raposa, Robert Henson, Robbie Duncan and Alex Espinoza

As a panel, the team talks about everything ranging from Kirk Cousins and his future, what happens if Joe Barry stays and Sean McVay leaves, who our picks are for the Redskins offensive and defensive players of the year, and more!

It's an absolutely mammoth episode wrapping up the season that probably raised more questions than it answered for the Redskins brass, as we now head into that long and dark part of the year we call "Waiting for Redskins Season".
